However unlike H1N1, all of that lab work makes SARS-CoV-2 very very unnatural, so it will not fade back into human populations like H1N1, but will instead continue to reassemble itself back to its original highly-pathogenic form, just like OPV is still doing all across the globe.
And just like OPV reverts and spreads around poor sanitation, the 250k volunteers at the Wuhan Military Games and poor fecal sanitation habits in China served as accelerates for SARS-CoV-2's reversion, and its FCS was selected for out of the quasispecies swarm during this heightened transition, just like in 2012 when H5N1 was subject to mutagenic processes by two different teams, creating a hidden FCS that was selected for when the chance for airborne transmission between ferrets was presented.
